Aberlour 10yo

Aberlour 10yoWhisky: Aberlour 1o, 43% ABV, 75cl
R360 ≈ £32.

Aberlour are one of the handful of distilleries that use lots of sherry influence. Depending on the release, spirit matured in ex-sherry casks can range anywhere from 25%-50% of the final vatting. Only the 10yo is available in SA stores, however, I’ve seen the 12yo, 15yo, and highly regarded A’bunadh in our duty free in the airports. Lately I’ve noticed a small increase in the price for the 10yo, hopefully this is due to inflation and not a sign the distillery are having trouble securing their necessary sherry casks from Spain.

Nose: I really like this nose; it has lovely sweet honey notes and the vapours are thick and tasty. It hints at a rich and full malt.

Taste: Medium to full body. Subtle nutmeg and other lighter spices emerge but they linger in the distance and allow the smoothness and the richness of the malt to shine. The sweetness remains but it is less sharp now and with more dried fruits, like apricots.

Finish: A long, very smooth finish that leaves the mouth fresh and glowing. For so much sherry influence it has a surprisingly crispness to it.

My Score: 82/100

This is excellent value for money, and personally, how I prefer younger, normal ABV, sherried whisky to be done. For a 10yo it’s well rounded with lots of flavour. A great purchase if you’re wanting an everyday dram that won’t break the bank.

Scores: MJ = 83/100, JM 09 = 94/100, MM = 78/100
