Dalmore 12yo
Whisky: The Dalmore 12yo, 43%
R480 ≈ £43
The newer Dalmore 12yo is bottled at 40% ABV and is matured in 50% American white oak ex-bourbon and 50% Oloroso sherry wood casks. As this one is bottled at 43% I assume its the older release, even though the packaging is the same, which was matured in 70% bourbon and 30% sherry casks.
Nose: A lovely mixture of fruit and spice. Fruit cake, oranges, peaches and sultanas. A suggestion of smoke.
Taste: Sherry and spice and all things nice. Good mouth feel, rich flavours. Fruit sweetness darts in and out of the sherry. A generous dose of barley notes added in for good measure. Lots of personality.
Finish: Medium with lovely warming finish. Slightly bitter just at the end.
My Score: 78
With all the commotion The Dalmore make with their old and ultra premium limited releases, its good to know that one of their entry expressions in the core range is a well made, reliable dram. Not sure how available this one at 43% is, but from what I’ve read the newer one is very similar and probably even better if you enjoy your whiskies sherried.
