Jura 10yo

Whisky: Isle of Jura 10yo, 43%
R380 ≈ £35

The core expression in the Jura range, carrying the “Celtic symbol for birth, beginning and the forces of nature” – that’s a lot of responsibility for, not only a single symbol, but a humble 10yo! I think I’ve tried this before at a whisky festival a few years ago, but it was the worst whisky of the evening and I’d had quite a few, so I’ve been looking forward to trying it again under more formal circumstances.

Nose: An  autumn, toasted oak embraced with notes of burnt sugar and caramel. A slight tartness on the nose and the lightest touch of peat smoke. Needs time to air, there is a mustiness at first that gratefully dissipates quickly.

Taste: A rich and oily mouth-feel that wraps your taste-buds with oak and butter. Very smooth, especially for a 10yo. Eerily devoid of any flavours that really stand out; this is all about the texture and mouth-feel.

Finish: Similarly here the whisky exits smoothly while still playing it safe except for a pinch of saltiness, or as some may call it: brine.

My Score: 77

Although not a cracking dram, I’m not disappointed. This is definitely another whisky that you could introduce to newcomers. It doesn’t exhibit any real character apart from its smooth-talking drinkability, which can’t be denied is a fine accomplishment.

Other Scores: JM’11 80.5, JH 75
