Mortlach 13yo IB
Whisky: Mortlach 13yo 1993/2006, 46%
Murray McDavid, 3600 bottles
R370 ≈ £34

Mortlach’s are usually matured in ex-sherry casks, so this bourbon and port matured dram with additional finishing in vintage port casks, is a bit of an oddity to say the least. What a colour though! The darkest whisky I’ve seen to date, you can’t even see through the bottle.
Nose: A juicy and intricate nose of mixed berries, with some light apples notes and dried apricots.
Taste: Rich, full-bodied, fruity and spicy; quite a combination, but the flavours are well married. Tannins abound and thus a bitterness present.
Finish: Spiced fruits, mainly berries, are back. But a bit rough, a bit feisty, and a bit short.
My Score: 78
There seems to be much more port influence in this vatting than bourbon; none of the customary telltale bourbon flavours present. Although enjoyable, still a little rough around the edges; it has the flavours, it just needs some finesse.
Other Scores: Couldn’t find any.
Sorry for the poor photo, will reattempt again soon.
