Tomintoul 14yo

Whisky: Tomintoul 14yo, 46%
± £33 ≈ R380 (I haven’t seen this in SA, and it won’t be this well priced.)

Unlike other Tomintouls this 14yo, which was relaunched in 2009, is bottled at 46% ABV, not chill-filtered, and has no added colouring – like a good whisky should be really!

Nose: Full of floral and light fruit notes. Coconut, boxed apple juice. There are some  higher sharper notes like nail polish remover and paint cleaner, but not to its detriment. Delicate but not evasive.

Taste: Not what I expected at all. This carries much more of a punch than the 16yo. Its creamy, somewhat oily and has a good weighty mouth feel. Coconut and floral still present, but I also get some brown sugar and sponge cake.

Finish: Long and enduring. Apple returns. A slight emergence of spice; nutmeg and pepper.

My Score: 80

I’m very pleasantly surprised by this. The more natural bottling of this whisky makes such a positive difference (no surprise) and adds a lot more character while still retaining the typical Tomintoul notes. Not sure how widely available this is, but it’s definitely better than both the 16yo and 27yo by a few points, so I would recommend shopping around for it.

Other Scores: Couldn’t find any.
