Named in honour of the year Kentucky joined the USA, Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully-operating distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Situated in the heart of bourbon country on 196 acres, the distillery boasts 29 barrel-aging warehouses with capacity to mature 2,000,000 barrels.
The distillery was established by Ben Mattingly, but he sold the company to an employee, Tom Moore, and another fellow employee who renamed it Morton Spring Distillery. After selling the business to a group of outside investors in 1881, Moore opened a new competing distillery next door and, after much success, was able to re-purchase the distillery, merging the two operations.
In 2009 Sazerac, owner of the Buffalo Trace distillery, bought the distillery and capitalising on the current brand names, rather than historic ones, re-christened the entire operation to Barton 1792 Distillery.
These two 1792 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys are exclusive releases. Although not disclosed on the labels, both were distilled in 2014 and bottled late last year, making them 9 years old. Although not barrel proof/cask strength, they are bottled at a higher alcohol than the standard 1792 Small Batch release.
