The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a farmer and teacher, when he obtained a licence to distill whisky. After Alexander Reid's death in 1848, Macallan changed owners several times, until Roderick Kemp bought the distillery in 1892, marking the beginning of the Kemp Family Trust era.
They distillery was expanded and led to success under the label Macallan-Glenlivet. Macallan was bought by Highland Distillers in 1996, who in turn were taken over by the Edrington Group in 1999.
Although most well-known for their European oak sherry maturation, the distillery has been using ex-bourbon casks and American oak season with sherry, for the last few decades, with more and more of their whiskies incorporating these cask types.
