In 1821 William Smith founded a distillery on the outskirts of Thurso in the far north of Scotland and named it after the local water source, Wolfburn. Sadly, that distillery fell into ruin a few decades later and was all but forgotten by history.
Then in 2011 new plans were underway by two whisky enthusiasts to build a new distillery in the same area. After discovering the history of the long-lost local distillery, and considering the new distillery would be a short walk from the original location and would use the same water source, it was named Wolfburn. In 2013 the first spirit ran from the stills, and in the following years Wolfburn, under the master distiller Shane Fraser (who previously worked at Glenfarclas), has fast gained a reputation for its quality whiskies punching well above their weight.
