DESCRIPTION

A single cask and very rare release from the now closed Karuizawa distillery. Distilled in 1980, matured for 35 years in a single ex-bourbon cask (#8283) and bottled in 2015. The box and label art features "Moon above the Sea at Daimotsu Bay", a famous woodblock print by the Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. It is part of his series called "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" (Tsuki hyakkei), which was published between 1885 and 1892. Only 401 bottles were produced. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at a cask strength of 57.1%. (Bottle size 70cl)

NOTES FROM THE WB TEAM

Under the ownership of Mercian Corporation, Karuizawa distillery was opened in 1955 in Miyota, Japan, a town on the southern slopes of an active volcano, and began production in 1956. The distillery housed four small stills and imported Golden Promise barley from Scotland to create their whisky, which was then often aged in sherry casks. The distillery was mothballed in 2001, with stocks slowly trickling out to market, where the bottles have become quite the collector's item for whisky enthusiasts. In 2011, the UK-based company Number One Drinks purchased the remaining stocks of Karuizawa’s whisky.
