Made from a blend of 85% grenache and 15% shiraz grape varietals (South African wine labelling law states if a wine is made from at least 85% of one variety, the other varieties, if any, need not be indicated on the label). The grenache came from dry-farmed bush vines on a western-facing slope above Wellington on Tukulu soil and the Syrah was from the organically certified Kasteelsig vineyard in Swartland. Grapes were 20% whole-bunch fermented in small vessels with manual punch-downs. The wine was pressed into barrels, 15% of which were new, where it spent 8 months. A total of 2,500 bottles were produced. The label illustration is from a page in an 18th century book on hunting in Southern Africa, a time when painted wolves were common throughout the region. Bottled at 14%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Red fruit, smoked meat and mixed spice abound with subtle herbaceous notes similar to Italian dried herbs.
Palate: This is an expressive wine with good acidity. On entry it greets you with plenty of cranberries, sour cherries and dates. Tannin structure is elegant and soft.
Finish: Liquorice and dried herbs with soft lingering savoury notes.
