Discontinued in the mid-1960s, Red Spot was reintroduced to Irish Distillers’ core range of single pot still Irish whiskeys in 2018. "The Spot" whiskey range was first released during the early 1900s, taking its name from the daub of coloured paint used to mark maturing casks to determine the potential age of the whiskey – a blue mark indicated 7 years, green 10, yellow 12 and red 15. Produced at the New Midleton distillery based on an old recipe handed down by Mitchell & Son, the Red Spot is matured for at least 15 years in a combination of ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry and marsala fortified wine casks. Non-chillfiltered and bottled at 46%.
Nose: Pot still spices with rich cooked fruit, baked apple, mango and black cherry. Hazelnut and a touch of new leather fuse with toasted American oak.
Palate: A mix of ripe fruit sweetness from the Marsala seasoned wine casks. While the fruit remains, sweet red pepper and cracked black pepper add some spiciness, finished by notes of American oak and barley.
Finish: An extra-long infusion of fruits and spices.
