Produced by Thinus Krüger, winemaker at Fram Wines, grapes for the Fram Pinotage 2017 were sourced from a single vineyard of bushvines planted in 1978, located in the mountains north of Clanwilliam, about 3 hours north of Cape Town. The 2017 vintage followed a below average winter in 2016, but was not a dry year, and is considered one of the finest, if not the finest vintage in the past 20 years, with wines from this vintage displaying amazing depth and natural balance. Grapes underwent 15 days natural fermentation with 15% of stems added back to the fermentation and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. Maturation was for 20 months, 50% in older French oak barrels and 50% in very expensive new Austrian oak. Residual sugar: 2.6g/l. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Lovely dried red fruit intensity, figs, dates and prunes with hints of cedar wood and sweet spices.
Palate: On entry a lovely dark red fruit intensity, dried blackberry, prunes and plums. Mid-palate has a lovely more savoury, meaty flavour profile.
Finish: Soft ripe tannins with lingering notes of cloves and cedarwood.
