Grapes for the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 were sourced from select vineyards, including parcels from the Helderberg slopes. Despite higher rainfall, the lingering effects of a three-year drought led to smaller crops in the 2019 harvest. Uneven ripening early in the season was addressed by removing green or uneven bunches after véraison. Cooler weather towards the end of ripening produced smaller, intensely flavoured berries, resulting in elegant wines. The grapes were de-stemmed but not crushed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks and open-top fermenters using a mix of punch-downs and pump-overs, with reduced extraction towards the end. Post-fermentation, they were gently pressed and aged in 300-litre French oak barrels (80% new) for 18 months before blending. Residual sugar: 4.1g/l. Bottled at 14.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: An intense bouquet that shows savoury tobacco notes along with liquorice and mint with a deep core of black plum and cassis.
Palate: The palate shows a density and depth of flavour only found in the best vintages. An opulent entry of the dark fruit seen on the nose gives way to vibrant back palate with a refreshing acidity.
Finish: Despite the wine’s ‘broad shoulders’ it maintains a svelte structure and almost never-ending finish. A brilliant example of how great Stellenbosch Cabernet can be, highlighting the perfect balance between new-world opulence and old-world elegance.
